Counting l-letter subwords in compositions

چکیده

Let N be the set of all positive integers and let A be any ordered subset of N. Recently, Heubach and Mansour enumerated the number of compositions of n with m parts in A that contain the subword τ exactly r times, where τ ∈ {111, 112, 221, 123}. Out aims are (1) to generalize the above results, i.e., to enumerate the number of compositions of n with m parts in A that contain an l-letter subword, and (2) to analyze the number of compositions of n with m parts that avoid an l-letter pattern, for given l. We use tools such as asymptotic analysis of generating functions leading to Gaussian asymptotic. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 05A05, 05A15, 05A16

Counting `-letter subwords in compositions

The Distribution of Run Lengths in Integer Compositions

We find explicitly the generating function for the number of compositions of n that avoid all words on a given list of forbidden subwords, in the case where the forbidden words are pairwise letter-disjoint. From this we get the gf for compositions of n with no k consecutive parts equal, as well as the number with m parts and no consecutive k parts being equal, which generalizes corresponding re...

FPOL Systems Generating Counting Languages

— Counting languages are the languages of the form {axa\.. .a n t\ t^2, n^ 1} where au ..., atare letters no two consécutive ofwhich are identical. They possess a "clean structure" in the sensé that if an arbitrary wordfrom such a language is eut in t subwords ofequal length then no two consécutive subwords contain an occurrence of the same letter, It is shown that whenever an FPOL system G is ...

A Matrix q-Analogue of the Parikh Map

We introduce an extension of the Parikh mapping called the Parikh -matrix mapping, which takes its values in matrices with polynomial entries. The morphism constructed represents a word over a -letter alphabet as a -dimensional upper-triangular matrix with entries that are nonnegative integral polynomials in variable . We show that by appropriately embedding the -letter alphabet into the -lette...

Counting chemical compositions using Ehrhart quasi-polynomials

To count the number of chemical compositions of a particular mass, we consider an alphabet A with a mass function which assigns a mass to each letter in A. We then compute the mass of a word (an ordered sequence of letters) by adding the masses of the constituent letters. Our main interest is to count the number of words that have a particular mass, where we ignore the order of the letters with...
